A mining shovel is a specialized type piece of mining industry heavy excavating equipment used to scoop the mined materials (e.g. ore, overburden, coal, or sand) in strip mining.


Mining shovels are among the various types of heavy equipment used in mining Industry, also known as front power shovels. Shovels are commonly used in mining industry for digging, loading, and extraction of mined / earth minerals. For surface mining operations, they are used to excavate large quantities of rock and soil in strip and equipped with bucket and are electrically powered machines.

The mining shovels for mining, have been in use since long past the late 1800s. When they were initially built, they were use to be powered by steam. With the advancement of fuel technology, mining shovels became powered either by electricity or diesel fuel. Shovels also have other applications in addition to mining industry applications. Some of applications include moving massive amounts of earth for dam canals, roads construction, railroad, etc.

Difference between Mining Dragline and Mining shovel

1. Bucket mining shovels are transported usually on tracks, similar to track hoe or a tank but mining draglines often use special pontoons or walking feet to move for the reason that of their weight. Mining Draglines in general cannot move very far very fast. If they are required to move over a longer distance, customized / special carriers to transport them.

2. Another difference between these mining draglines and shovels is their digging action. A bucket mining shovel typically has a heavy-duty boom that supports its bucket and digs out into the ground from itself. The dragline has a flexible, rope-controlled bucket that cuts the ground toward itself. A dragline is typically set up at job site and works downwards, while a mining shovel’s bucket can work upwards from where it is operationally located.
3. The dragline and shovel machines can move large volumes of dirt. A mining shovel can move up to approx. 160 cubic meters of dirt in one shovel. Typically, when a mining shovel is used, it is combined with a large dump truck into which the excavated earth is placed via the bucket release by the shovel. When the dump truck is full, the excavated material is moved to where it is needed, e.g. for processing.

Mining shovel swing bearing lubricant - shovel ring gear lubricant

Mining shovels typically consist of a rotating platform with power unit, drive and control mechanism (normally a counterweight), and front attachments such as a crane (“boom” that supports a handle (“bucket” or “dipper bar”) ) with an excavator (“bucket”) at the end. “Dipper” is also sometimes used to refer to a combination handle and digger. The machine is mounted on a base platform with tracks or wheels. The shovel swing gear is provided with shovel ring gear lubricant.

A slewing bearing or slewing ring is a rotating joint between the upper and lower frames of an excavator. It is an important part of the machine as it allows the top structure to rotate 360° while the bottom structure remains stationary. The assembly of the slewing gear may vary by excavator make and model, but the key components remain the same. The shovel ring gear requires to be lubricated properly.
